Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Blockchain AI)

At Coinbase we are building the emerging onchain platform and seeking a Senior Software Engineer to accelerate AI automation across the Blockchain Platform. The team has built NodeSmith and other agent systems and partners with teams across Blockchain Platform to launch production-grade agents and reusable AI building blocks for company-wide use.

Responsibilities

• Build core services and SDKs for long-running, production-grade agent systems.
• Drive projects that get the most out of tools like Cursor and Claude Code for engineers across the organization.
• Directly ship agents with Blockchain Platform teams.
• Work with Python and Go, LangGraph, GoogleADK, MCPs, and other platform tools.
• Design scalable systems using modern cloud technology and industry best practices.
• Articulate long-term vision for maintaining and scaling backend systems and the teams running them.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers and senior leadership to turn product and technical vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining production services and composing a service-oriented architecture.
• Strong emphasis on writing high-quality, well-tested code.
• Passion for building an open financial system and an interest in crypto/blockchain technology.

Nice to haves

• Interest and experience in building and scaling agent systems.
• Daily use of AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot.
• Exposure to agent frameworks and related concepts.
• Experience with rapid company growth (startup to mid-size).
• Experience with Blockchain technologies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
• Experience with Golang, Python, Docker, Postgres, MongoDB or DynamoDB.
• Crypto-forward experience, including interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, or engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services.

Work arrangement

• Remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites multiple times annually). #LI-Remote

Pay Range and Benefits

• Pay Range: $186,065—$218,900 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus + equity + benefits).
