Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Developer - X402)

Join Coinbase to help build the future of internet-native payments. The x402 protocol is an open, internet-scale standard designed to make global payments as seamless as sending an email. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the x402 team, you will help define and evolve the protocol, build developer tools, SDKs, and payment infrastructure, and collaborate with the open-source community to bring x402 to life. This role is high-impact and sits at the intersection of crypto, payments, agentic commerce, and open standards. While the company is remote-first, in-person participation is required throughout the year for team and company-wide offsites.

Responsibilities

• Define the x402 protocol standard for an internet-native payment protocol.
• Build and maintain x402-related products such as the x402 SDK, Payment MCP, Payment Facilitators, and onchain payment protocols.
• Collaborate with open-source contributors to evolve the standard through GitHub discussions, issues, and PR reviews.
• Build scalable, secure backend systems and SDKs that work closely with frontend engineers and external integrators.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in software development with a strong focus on backend development and close collaboration with frontend engineers.
• Strong experience building scalable and secure software and SDKs.
• Proficiency with Golang, TypeScript, and Python.
• Knowledge of Web3 technologies, stablecoins, smart contracts, and wallets.
• Experience working with open-source communities (GitHub discussions, issues, PR reviews) is highly relevant.
• Ability to work in a remote-first environment while participating in required in-person events and offsites throughout the year.

Nice to haves

• Experience with AI and emerging AI protocol standards (MCP, A2A).
• Track record of building and maintaining impactful open-source projects.

Pay Transparency

• Target annual salary range: $191,100—$191,111 CAD
• Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
