As part of the Coinbase x402 team, you’ll help define and evolve the x402 protocol — an open, internet-scale standard designed to make global payments as seamless as sending an email — while building the developer tools, SDKs, and payment infrastructure that bring x402 to life. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of crypto, payments, agentic commerce, and open standards.

Responsibilities

• Define the x402 protocol standard for an internet-native payment protocol.
• Build and maintain x402-related products such as the x402 SDK, Payment MCP, Payment Facilitators, and onchain payment protocols.
• Collaborate with open-source contributors to evolve the standard through GitHub discussions, issues, and PR reviews.
• Work closely with frontend engineers and other cross-functional partners to design and implement scalable, secure backend systems and SDKs.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in software development with strong focus on backend development.
• Strong experience building scalable and secure software and SDKs.
• Proficiency with Golang, TypeScript, and Python.
• Knowledge of Web3 technologies, stablecoins, smart contracts, and wallets.
• Comfortable collaborating with open-source communities and participating in protocol definition and maintenance.

Nice to haves

• Experience with AI and emerging AI protocol standards (MCP, A2A).
• Track record of building and maintaining impactful open-source projects.
• Crypto experience is a plus.

Work model and expectations

• While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, the company is not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually and attendance is expected and supported.

Pay and benefits

• Pay Range: $186,065 — $218,900 USD (target annual salary; offers may include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits).
