Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Infra Core Reliability

At Coinbase we aim to increase economic freedom in the world by building the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. This role is part of the Infrastructure (Platform) organization on the Core Reliability team, which owns company-wide reliability and scalability initiatives such as scalability/load testing, configuration management, and canary-based safe release capability.

Responsibilities

• Promote reliability culture across Coinbase and contribute to company-wide reliability goals.
• Design, build, and enhance world-class service configuration manager systems to secure service configurations and secrets.
• Build and improve Safe Release (canary-based deployment) capabilities and onboard thousands of services that run hundreds of deployments daily.
• Help scale systems by 10–20x while minimizing customer impact and incidents.
• Dive into understanding, debugging, and improving any layer of the stack as needed.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining production services and composing service-oriented architectures.
• Strong technical skills in system design and coding; write high-quality, well-tested code with customer focus.
• Strong skills around observability, debugging, and performance tuning.
• Demonstrated ability to reduce incidents and improve system reliability.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and simply.
• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with engineers from junior to principal levels.
• Demonstrated critical thinking under pressure and a bias toward open, transparent cultural practices.

Nice to Haves

• Familiarity with rapid growth environments.
• Experience with Ruby, Go, and Terraform.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure or other cloud environments.
• Experience designing and building reliable systems and working in highly regulated environments.
• Experience writing company-facing blog posts and training materials.
• Crypto-forward experience (onchain activity, interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, or blockchain-based services).

Compensation

• Pay Range: $186,065 — $218,900 USD (target bonus + target equity + benefits may be included depending on location).

• Role is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation (team/company offsites and periodic in-person collaboration) is required throughout the year. #LI-Remote
