Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Institutional - Markets, Derivatives)

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Institutional Product Group enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. The Markets Derivatives team develops and manages core systems powering Coinbase’s US Derivatives and International Exchanges, including Matching Engines, Order Management Systems, FIX, REST, and Market Data gateways. This role focuses on building scalable, high-volume, low-latency backend services using modern cloud technologies.

Responsibilities

• Build and enhance services to meet critical product and business needs using Java, Golang and RDS Postgres.
• Design scalable high-volume and low-latency systems using modern cloud technology and industry best practices.
• Work with engineers, designers, and product managers to turn product and technical vision into a roadmap each quarter.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code.
• Maintain production services and database infrastructure.
• Contribute to service-oriented architecture and operational reliability for exchange and derivatives systems.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining critical low-latency production services.
• Ability to compose and work within a service-oriented architecture.
• Awareness and interest in optimizing and maintaining at least one major SQL or NoSQL database (Postgres, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB).
• Passion for building an open financial system and interest in crypto and blockchain technologies.

Nice to haves

• Domain experience with crypto, derivatives, or other financial products.
• Experience architecting complex distributed systems at scale.
• Experience building trading systems or matching engines with high-volume and low-latency characteristics.
• Experience with Java, Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, and Postgres.
• Experience with Ad-Tech, financial, or SaaS systems.
• Experience navigating rapid company growth (startup to mid-size).

Compensation

Pay Range: $186,005—$218,900 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity, and benefits).
