Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?
At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.
To achieve our mission, Coinbase is seeking a candidate passionate about crypto and blockchain technology to help build an industry-leading, ultra-low-latency indexing platform that ingests and indexes data across major blockchains. The platform powers internal teams and external developers via the Coinbase Developer Platform and provides a real-time backbone for diverse use cases.
The team works across a modern streaming stack (gRPC, Kafka, and more) to design, build, and operate low-latency services at scale. The team takes a platform-first approach—delivering platform primitives, SDKs, and tooling that accelerate developer velocity and reduce time-to-market.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate low-latency indexing/streaming services on gRPC, Kafka, and the team’s real-time stack.
- Own APIs, schemas, SLOs, observability, and on-call for the systems you run.
- Lead multi-month initiatives (new chains, re-architecture, migrations/backfills) to improve latency, reliability, and cost.
- Partner across teams to define data contracts and ship SDKs/platform primitives that drive adoption.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
- Very strong experience in distributed systems or data systems. Crypto experience is a big plus.
- Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
- Passion for building an indexing platform that brings Web3 and Web2 together.
Nice to haves
- Experience designing and developing distributed systems.
- Experience scaling rapidly (e.g., company growth from ~10 to 100s of engineers).
- Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
- Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
- Experience with Golang, Kafka, Redis, S3, ClickHouse, MongoDB.
- Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.
- Crypto-forward experience (onchain activity, ENS, dApps, interacting with Ethereum addresses).
Compensation and benefits
- Pay Range: $186,065—$218,900 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits).
- Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, HSA contributions, disability & life insurance, wellness stipend, mobile/internet reimbursement, connections stipend, volunteer time off, fertility counseling, generous time off/leave policy, and the option to get paid in digital currency.
