Details

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Staking Validators team is responsible for operating all staking-related nodes at Coinbase. We operate the largest validators fleet in the world and build infrastructure to provide secure, high-uptime staking services. The team focuses on observability, monitoring, operational excellence, and continuous innovation to maximize yield and reliability for customers and internal teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage one or more projects end-to-end, including large and complex efforts (examples in the posting include supporting major Ethereum releases and hardforks such as the Pectra upgrade, researching and supporting deep technical changes within clients, and optimizing local DB performance).
  • Launch high-quality products and ensure smooth project landings using engineering judgment and proven technologies.
  • Partner with Product to influence quarterly and long-term roadmaps through technical proposals.
  • Support and follow Coinbase paved roads and best devops/infra practices to improve operational efficiency for the validator fleet.
  • Drive operational excellence around uptime, security, and yield for protocol-specific infrastructure (Ethereum-focused pod member expected).
  • Engage with internal protocol specialists and the external protocol developer community to understand upcoming network changes (governance proposals, upgrades, breaking changes, etc.).
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for all protocols Coinbase supports, while acting as a go-to person for Ethereum.
  • Help onboard and coach junior engineers and contribute to team mentoring.

Requirements

  • Significant experience operating blockchain validator infrastructure and familiarity with proof-of-stake networks (Ethereum experience strongly emphasized).
  • Experience with client upgrades, handling protocol changes (EIPs, hardforks), and working with protocol tooling and repositories (posting references eth formatting changes and public posts).
  • Strong background in observability and monitoring to ensure high uptime and performance for distributed validator fleets.
  • Practical experience with Kubernetes and running staking nodes on Kubernetes (posting includes a public blog: "Operating staking nodes on Kubernetes").
  • Experience optimizing performance (including DB/local DB performance) and driving yield/security improvements for validator operations.
  • Comfortable working closely with Product, external protocol communities, and cross-functional partners.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and operational duties.
  • Leadership experience: manage projects end-to-end and coach junior engineers.
