The Internationalization Infrastructure team (i18n team) aims to foster global belonging and offer the best localization experience by providing reliable, efficient, scalable, and extensible globalization infrastructure and tooling for Airbnb code, content, and stakeholders. The I18n Infrastructure team is part of the Core Services org within Infrastructure and works closely with the broader Globalization business org to contribute directly to top-line goals and make the entire engineering organization more productive. The team focuses on infrastructure engineering with a human focus: customer-centric, quality driven, helpful and empathetic.

A Typical Day

Millions of users engage with the Airbnb app in their preferred languages every day. As an engineer on the i18n Infrastructure team, you will:

• Build intuitive workflows and tools serving stakeholders, business partners, and end users
• Enable internationalization infrastructure to scale in a cost-efficient way
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Globalization, Data Science, product teams, platform teams, and external vendors
• Build scalable systems supporting high-scale real-time translation requests and efficient retrieval of translated content
• Contribute to and learn industry best practices on internationalization

Your Expertise

• 5-9+ years of industry experience with a BS/Masters preferably in CS, or equivalent experience
• Strong programming skills, particularly in backend server languages such as Java, Kotlin, C++ or equivalent
• Experience building, maintaining, and optimizing large-scale backend systems, APIs, and databases within service-oriented architecture
• Familiarity with architectural patterns of high-scale web applications like APIs, data pipelines, and efficient algorithms
• Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/Typescript, modern JavaScript libraries and tooling (e.g. React, GraphQL)
• Desire to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams with design, product, and data science partners
• Passionate about globalization, user experience, efficiency, availability, and system quality

Location

This position is US - Remote Eligible, with possible occasional work at Airbnb offices or attendance at offsites as agreed with manager. Candidates must live in a US state where Airbnb has a registered entity (some states excluded).

Compensation

Base pay range: $191,000 — $225,000 USD. Includes eligibility for bonus, equity, benefits, and employee travel credits.
