Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure (Platform - Routing)

Join Coinbase's Infrastructure org to help build the routing systems that power service-to-service and edge traffic across a global onchain platform. This role focuses on designing, building, and operating secure, fault-tolerant internal routing mechanisms and edge systems that improve reliability, performance, and developer experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate edge and internal routing systems, including edge gateway, service mesh, service identity, service discovery, and traffic management.
• Implement customer-focused abstractions to simplify and standardize routing capabilities for internal users.
• Own the performance, automation, and standardization of edge and internal routing across Coinbase.
• Anticipate and design for the long-term needs of routing infrastructure.
• Contribute to technical decisions with design justification and collaborate across teams.
• Gather requirements, identify gaps, and propose routing improvements and new capabilities.
• Produce clear professional documentation and architecture diagrams for infrastructure colleagues and users.
• Manage and assist in resolving complex technical incidents and problems; provide appropriate communication and escalation.
• Support and maintain existing infrastructure offerings to ensure high availability and service levels.
• Build effective working relationships with Infrastructure, Security, business partners, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Keep up to date with developments and best practices in routing, networking, and related domains and make forward-looking recommendations.

Requirements

• At least 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency with a modern tech stack (example given: Go) and service communication technologies (example given: gRPC).
• Strong understanding and practical experience with networking primitives and concepts such as TCP, HTTP, TLS, and interprocess communications (UDS).
• Experience building services on public cloud providers (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with knowledge of cloud networking concepts.
• Demonstrated experience operating critical, high-traffic infrastructure: monitoring (golden signals, service-specific metrics, logs, traces), Unix network debugging, scaling, and proactively addressing performance and reliability issues.
• Solid software engineering practices and the ability to foster high-quality code and engineering processes.
• Clear communication, positive energy, continuous learning, and efficient execution.
• Flexibility to adapt in a dynamic environment and ability to balance multiple deadlines and priorities.

Nice to Haves

• Crypto-forward experience (onchain activity, interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, blockchain services).
• Experience with distributed systems and container orchestration.
• Practical experience with Kubernetes.
• Practical experience with SPIFFE/SPIRE.
• Practical experience with Service Mesh technologies (Istio, Envoy, Linkerd, etc.).
• Technical understanding of X.509 and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
• Experience working through rapid company growth (e.g., 10 -> 100s of engineers).
• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.

Pay Range

• Target annual salary: $186,065 — $218,900 USD (full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits).

Work Model & Culture

• Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites are held multiple times annually and attendance is expected).
