Airbnb connects hosts and guests worldwide and is expanding the Messaging & Notifications experience to better serve hosts and travelers. This role focuses on architecting and implementing advanced machine learning solutions—recommendation engines, ranking systems, intent detection models—and integrating intelligence into existing platforms. A major emphasis is on harnessing Large Language Models (LLMs) to build transformative AI experiences. You will shape initiatives from early concept through production, leading ML, Data, and Product engineers and collaborating with applied scientists and software engineers.

Responsibilities

• Envision, champion, and support development of novel ML systems, product integrations, and performance optimizations to solve real-world problems.
• Architect and implement advanced ML solutions including recommendation engines, ranking systems, and intent detection models.
• Lead efforts to incorporate Large Language Models (LLMs) into product experiences.
• Drive projects from early conceptual stages to production deployments.
• Lead, mentor, challenge, and grow collaborative software engineers and applied scientists across the organization.
• Raise the AI/ML skillset across teams; teach and mentor colleagues.
• Collaborate with ML, Data, and Product engineering teams to deliver ML-powered products and integrations.

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience.
• 2+ years in a Principal or Senior Staff Engineer role with ownership responsibility over large-scale software systems.
• Strong background in design and development of scalable AI and ML systems and services.
• Deep passion for building ML-powered products and productionizing ML solutions.
• Experience leading and fostering engineering maturity across multiple organizations; strong mentorship and coaching skills.
• Proven ability to work proactively, communicate clearly, and deliver high-impact technical solutions.

Location & Work Eligibility

• This position is US - Remote Eligible; occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required as agreed with your manager.
• Candidates must live in a U.S. state where Airbnb, Inc. (or the employing Airbnb entity) has a registered entity. The list of excluded states is maintained by Airbnb and may change.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base pay range: $244,000—$305,000 USD.
• The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
• Actual base pay depends on factors such as training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market demands.
