At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Risk AI/ML team builds flexible, scalable, and intelligent systems to detect and prevent fraud, scams, and account takeovers at scale. As a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer on Risk AI/ML you will lead design and implementation of advanced AI/ML models and systems that power real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled risk-detection workflows, collaborating closely with Platform, Product, Analyst, and Ops teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end design and deployment of AI/ML models and systems that scale to millions of users.
- Investigate and apply cutting-edge methodologies (examples called out: large-scale deep learning, LLMs, GNNs, reinforcement learning) to problems such as fraud detection, recommender systems, feed ranking, and risk assessment.
- Architect and build production-grade AI/ML models and pipelines that enable low-latency, high-reliability predictions and are robust and low-maintenance.
- Deliver measurable results, manage ambiguity, prioritize technical debt, and ensure systems evolve with business growth.
- Communicate and influence stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship, create onboarding codelabs, tools, and infrastructure to democratize AI/ML across teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, including significant experience deploying AI/ML systems into production.
- Deep expertise in applied AI/ML areas such as Risk ML, gradient boosting trees, large-scale deep learning, NLP/LLMs, computer vision, recommender systems, reinforcement learning, and GNNs.
- Strong coding skills (example: Python) and deep experience with AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.).
- Experience building backend systems at scale focused on data processing, AI/ML, or analytics.
- Demonstrated technical leadership: ability to lead complex cross-team initiatives and deliver impactful AI/ML solutions at scale.
- Strong strategic communication and leadership skills; experience mentoring senior engineers and raising the technical bar.
Nice to Haves
- Masterβs or PhD in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Mining, Statistics, or related technical field.
- Knowledge of modern data and AI/ML infrastructure (examples: Apache Airflow, Spark, Flink, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowflake, Hadoop, Hive).
- Familiarity with MLOps best practices (monitoring, retraining, continuous improvement of production models).
- Experience with model interpretability, responsible AI, data analysis, and visualization.
Pay & Employment Notes
- Pay Range: $260,100β$260,100 CAD (target annual salary for this position). Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, etc.).
