The Growth organization builds and leverages growth tools across referral and incentives programs, notifications, logged-out web experiences, and onboarding flows to make Coinbase the easiest, safest, and fastest way to buy, hold, and trade crypto assets.

This role seeks a Senior Staff Engineer to solve unique, large-scale, highly complex technical problems that bridge web-scale application constraints and blockchain technology. You will help build foundational systems and primitives to drive growth, operate real-time, low-latency applications, and manage highly secure cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Head of Growth Engineering, EMs, and Product Managers to improve incentives infrastructure and primitives and scale spend/profitability with high reliability and confidence.
• Build foundational systems and primitives to drive growth across Coinbase.
• Solve technical problems at web scale and integrate blockchain-specific constraints into backend systems.
• Operate and improve real-time applications with high frequency, low latency updates.
• Drive cross-team technical efforts and multi-quarter roadmaps with complex dependencies.
• Define and drive metrics and SLOs that reflect product quality and lead efforts to improve them.

Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience building and operating large-scale web and cloud systems.
• Strong track record of horizontal technical leadership across larger teams or multiple small teams.
• Experience driving multi-quarter roadmaps and working with complex cross-team dependencies.
• Deep understanding of production reliability, observability, and SLO-driven engineering.
• Experience working with blockchain/crypto systems or similar domain constraints (designing systems that integrate with onchain platforms and handle cryptographic and transactional considerations).
• Ability to reason about and deliver improvements for low-latency, high-frequency systems.
• Strong cross-functional partnership and collaboration skills with product and engineering leaders.

Nice to haves

• Experience in consumer- or growth-focused engineering (referral/incentives systems, notifications, onboarding flows).
• Experience working with ML directly or via APIs and understanding online/offline model evaluation techniques and where ML can impact user experience.

Compensation & Logistics

• Pay Range: $260,100 — $260,100 CAD (target annual salary). Full-time offers may also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
• Role is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites are held multiple times annually).
