Senior Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer - Growth & App Infra)

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. This Senior Staff Engineer will join the Growth & App Infrastructure organization to build the next generation of crypto-forward products and features. You will solve unique, large-scale, highly complex technical problems that bridge web-scale application constraints and blockchain technology, operate real-time applications with high-frequency, low-latency updates, and help run secure cloud infrastructure. This role requires in-person participation throughout the year (team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually).

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Head of Growth Engineering, engineering managers, and product managers to define and build mission-critical systems to enable user growth.
• Build foundational systems that power growth across Coinbase: incentives platform, notifications platform, and dynamic presentation systems.
• Build and scale user experiences across the Coinbase product experience, including SEO, logged-out experiences, user onboarding, search, discovery, and referrals.
• Drive a holistic and unified engineering strategy that delivers engineering quality and excellence across the organization.
• Drive multi-quarter roadmaps and manage complex dependencies within and outside the Growth team.
• Drive quality and performance across complex systems at scale; define and move product quality metrics and SLOs.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to drive multi-quarter roadmaps with complex dependencies.
• Strong track record of horizontal technical leadership across multiple engineering teams.
• Experience driving quality and performance across complex, large-scale systems and understanding relevant metrics and SLOs.
• Passion for cryptocurrency and blockchain technology and belief in their potential to update the financial system.
• Comfortable operating in fast-paced environments and delivering impact to the business.
• In-person participation throughout the year is required (remote-first but not remote-only).

Nice to haves

• Strong cross-functional partnership skills across Growth Engineering.
• Experience working across all parts of the stack (frontend, backend, infra).
• Experience with incentive systems, notifications, SEO, onboarding, search, discovery, or referral systems.

Compensation

• Pay Range: $253,895—$298,700 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits).
