While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

Responsibilities

• Improve observability, reliability and availability by defining and measuring key metrics
• Build automation and improve systems to eliminate toil and operations work
• Collaborate with our core infrastructure team to performance tune and optimize our cloud deployments (Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, EC2, etc.)
• Collaborate with Coinbase product teams to reduce service disruptions and automate incident response
• Proactively find and analyze reliability problems across business units and stack, then design and implement software for step-function improvements
• Educate, mentor and hold accountable the engineering team to improve system reliability and embed it as a core engineering value
• Write high quality, well tested code to meet customer needs
• Debug extremely difficult technical problems, improving systems usability in deployment, ownership, operation, and diagnosis
• Review feature designs across product areas and company-wide projects
• Own security, safety, scale, operational integrity, and architectural clarity of designs
• Build pipelines to integrate with third party vendors
• Participate in on-call support rotation for timely troubleshooting and resolution of urgent issues

Requirements

• At least 2+ years of experience in software engineering
• Experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining production services and composing a service oriented architecture
• Ability to write high quality, well-tested code
• Passion for building an open financial system
• Strong technical skills in system design and coding
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a bias toward open, transparent cultural practices
• Strong skills in observability, debugging, and performance tuning
• Strong interpersonal skills working with engineers from junior to principal levels
• Demonstrated critical thinking under pressure
• Willingness to understand, debug, and improve any layer of the stack
• Availability for on-call duties to ensure swift resolution of issues outside regular hours

Nice to Have

• Experience designing and building reliable systems for high throughput and low latency
• Experience with observability and monitoring systems such as Kibana, Datadog
• Familiarity with rapid growth environments
• Experience in Ruby, Go, and Terraform
• Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud environments
• Experience in highly regulated environments
• Experience writing company-facing blog posts and training materials
• Crypto-forward experience including familiarity with onchain activity like interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services
