About the team
The Applied team at OpenAI safely brings cutting-edge technology to the world. The team has released widely used products such as ChatGPT, Sora, and the OpenAI API, powering models including GPT-5 and multimodal capabilities across text, image, audio, and video. The Applied Engineering Ads Monetization team (within Financial Engineering) builds core systems handling money flows for ChatGPT Ads: low-latency, high-scale, high-reliability services that are financially correct, auditable, and explainable. This role sits at the intersection of ads delivery, data engineering, and financial systems.
Responsibilities
- Architect and build the core monetization systems for ChatGPT Ads.
- Build and operate core services and pipelines that power ads monetization end-to-end: event capture and validation, aggregation, pricing, metering, and producing billable outputs.
- Define and implement the source of truth for ads monetization data, including schemas, data models, and invariants to ensure outputs are consistent, explainable, and auditable.
- Own correctness and reconciliation: align production outputs with downstream invoicing/finance requirements, build controls and monitors, investigate gaps, and perform backfills.
- Develop across the stack to create comprehensive billing integrations for ChatGPT and API customers.
- Collaborate closely with Ads Engineering, Data Science, Product, Finance, Go-To-Market teams, and other engineers.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Significant experience developing and redeveloping distributed systems to launch new product capabilities and handle scaling challenges.
- Comfort engaging with partners outside engineering and communicating technical work clearly to non-engineering stakeholders.
- Strong desire to learn and to teach others; focus on building excellent user experiences.
- Ability to move fast in environments with loosely defined scope and competing priorities.
- Experience with ads systems is a plus but not required.
