OpenAI’s Applications Engineering organization builds and operates products that bring cutting-edge research to millions of users and developers worldwide. The team powers products such as ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, and AI-native applications. This role focuses on creating and evolving the ChatGPT Android app and future AI-powered mobile experiences: building new features, optimizing performance, and integrating the latest Android platform capabilities to deliver a reliable, secure, and delightful assistant on mobile devices.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship new experiences on Android that showcase the power of AI.
• Optimize app performance, reliability, and responsiveness at global scale.
• Establish robust testing frameworks and refine app architecture for long-term maintainability.
• Collaborate with product, design, research, and backend teams to deliver high-impact features.
• Provide technical leadership to shape the future of OpenAI’s Android platform.

Requirements

• Up to 6 years of professional software engineering experience (as described in the posting).
• Proven track record of building high-quality Android applications in production.
• Fluency in Kotlin (and/or Java) and familiarity with Android development tools and architecture components.
• Prioritize performance, security, and user experience in mobile development.
• Experience establishing testing frameworks and designing maintainable app architecture.
• Enjoy working cross-functionally with product, design, research, and backend teams.
• Ability to provide technical leadership and influence platform direction.

• Listed base pay: $255K (base pay may vary depending on market location, knowledge, skills, and experience). Total compensation also includes equity and performance-related bonus(es) for eligible employees.
