Software Engineer, Backend - Blockchain Platform (Blockchain Nodes)

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The CB Node team manages the blockchain nodes that connect Coinbase to the ~55 blockchains the company supports across products (Wallet, Retail, Institutional, Prime) and builds new nodes for Day 1 asset launches. This role is crypto-facing while also interacting with traditional web2 systems. The team focuses on reliability, scalability, automation, data consistency and reducing operational toil.

Responsibilities

• Upgrade and maintain blockchain nodes and related infrastructure.
• Implement automation to reduce operational toil and increase service effectiveness.
• Identify and build automation or platform investments to streamline services and reduce manual effort.
• Manage blockchain traffic, including stateful failover between multiple external providers.
• Ensure data consistency and block freshness to power internal services such as wallets and indexers.
• Ensure reliability and scalability across the blockchain platform stack.
• Pioneer technologies such as decoupling blockchain node storage and compute and build platforms on top of existing nodes.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining production services and composing service-oriented architectures.
• Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.
• Passion for crypto and building an open financial system.
• Willingness to participate in in-person collaboration events as Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only (attendance at team/company offsites is expected).

Nice to Haves

• Service ownership experience.
• Automation and process improvement experience.
• Blockchain-specific experience (nodes, node upgrades, block freshness, traffic management).
• Experience with integration testing.

Benefits & Other Details

• Pay Range (target annual): $154,000 — $154,000 CAD. Full-time offers may include target bonus, target equity and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
