Software Engineer, Backend - Blockchain Platform (Blockchain Nodes)

Coinbase is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join the CB Node team responsible for managing blockchain nodes that connect Coinbase to the ~55 blockchains the company supports. The role is crypto-facing while also touching traditional web2 systems. The team focuses on blockchain traffic management, data consistency and block freshness for internal services, ensuring reliability and scalability across the blockchain platform stack, exploring decoupling blockchain node storage and compute, and building higher-level platform abstractions to reduce engineering effort and operational toil.

Responsibilities

• Upgrade and maintain blockchain nodes across supported blockchains.
• Implement automation to reduce operational toil and increase service effectiveness.
• Identify new areas for automation and investment to streamline services and reduce manual effort.
• Work on blockchain traffic management, including stateful failover between multiple external providers.
• Manage data consistency and block freshness to power internal services such as wallets and indexers.
• Ensure reliability and scalability of the blockchain platform stack.
• Pioneer platform improvements such as decoupling node storage and compute and building platforms on top of existing nodes.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services and composing service-oriented architectures.
• Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code focused on customer needs.
• Passion for building an open financial system and for crypto/blockchain technology.
• Candidates may be evaluated on crypto-related questions to assess onchain experience.

Work Location and Culture

• Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year for team and company-wide offsites and other events. Attendance is expected and supported.

Compensation

• Pay Range: $152,405 — $179,300 USD (target bonus + target equity + benefits may be included in full-time offers).
