At Coinbase we are building the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. The Institutional product group supports Coinbase's institutional business — custody, staking, governance and web3 gateways — enabling institutions to participate in the crypto economy securely and at scale. This backend role focuses on solving large-scale, highly complex technical problems that bridge web-scale application constraints and blockchain technology, operating real-time applications with high frequency, low latency updates and managing secure, dockerized infrastructure in the cloud.
Responsibilities
- Decompose a monolithic Rails app into microservices and contribute to service oriented architectures.
- Articulate long-term technical vision for maintaining and scaling backend systems.
- Work with engineers, designers, product managers and senior leadership to convert product and technical vision into a tangible roadmap each quarter.
- Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.
- Operate and maintain production services that run with high frequency, low latency updates and secure dockerized cloud infrastructure.
Requirements
- At least 2+ years of experience in software engineering.
- Experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining production services and composing service-oriented architectures.
- Ability to write high quality, well-tested code.
- Passion for building an open financial system and working with crypto/blockchain technologies (preferred).
- Willingness to participate in in-person activities throughout the year (team and company offsites are held multiple times annually).
Nice to haves
- Experience through rapid company growth (startup -> mid-size).
- Experience building growth experiments or A/B tests.
- Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps).
- Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
- Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres, MongoDB, or Redshift.
- Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.

- Medical, dental and vision plans with generous employee contributions
- Health Savings Account with company contributions
