The Institutional Product Group enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. We build scalable, secure crypto platform features (custody, staking, governance, web3 gateways) and systems that power institutional participation in the crypto economy. This role focuses on backend engineering solving large-scale, low-latency, real-time problems at the intersection of web-scale applications and blockchain technology.

Responsibilities

  • Decompose a monolithic Rails application into microservices and help define the long-term architecture for scalable backend systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate product and technical vision into quarterly roadmaps.
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs and maintain high reliability and security standards.
  • Build and operate dockerized infrastructure running in the cloud, supporting high-frequency, low-latency real-time applications.

Requirements

  • At least 2+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services and composing service-oriented architectures.
  • Strong focus on writing high-quality, well-tested code.
  • Passion for crypto and blockchain technology and for building an open financial system.
  • Experience with cloud-based, dockerized infrastructure and operating secure, reliable production systems.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with rapid company growth (startup to mid-size) and building growth experiments or A/B tests.
  • Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps).
  • Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
  • Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres, MongoDB, or Redshift.
  • Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.

Pay & Additional Compensation

  • Pay Range: $152,405—$179,300 USD (target annual salary depending on work location).
  • Full-time offers may include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).

Work Policy

  • Coinbase roles are often remote-first but not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites); attendance is expected and supported.
