About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The team is a growing group of researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

Claude Design is a product from Anthropic Labs that lets users collaborate with Claude to create polished visual work: interactive prototypes, product mockups, slides, one-pagers, and marketing collateral. Engineers joining now will shape the product as it moves beyond research preview.

This is a craft-heavy, frontend-leaning Software Engineer role. You'll build the canvas, real-time editing, design-system inference, and AI-driven generation experiences. You will work at the intersection of research and product, rapidly building and testing new experiences in partnership with researchers, designers, and users.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship Claude Design's core surfaces (design canvas, real-time editing, inline comments, live adjustment controls), shipping early and often
  • Collaborate with research teams to turn generation capabilities into intuitive design experiences
  • Work with designers, internal test users, and external partners to gather feedback and iterate quickly
  • Set technical direction for frontend challenges: editor and canvas architecture, real-time collaboration, design-system inference, import/export, and performance at scale
  • Design and run experiments to test product hypotheses (prototypes, user tests, generation quality evaluations)
  • Own the product's quality bar for latency, responsiveness, reliability, and polish
  • Improve handoff to Claude Code so designs translate cleanly into production and feed insights back to research
  • Operate as a technical leader on a small team: shape roadmap, make pragmatic architecture decisions, and mentor engineers

Requirements (Qualifications & Skills)

  • 8+ years of experience building full-stack applications with deep frontend strength and track record of zero-to-one work in startup or startup-like environments
  • Experience setting technical direction for a team or workstream and mentoring other engineers while remaining hands-on
  • Strong design sensibility and high bar for craft; focus on interaction details, motion, and polish
  • Strong technical skills across modern web stacks (React, TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Go, etc.), including complex client-side state, performance, APIs, databases, and cloud technologies
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities and rapid shipping
  • Deeply user-centric: validate ideas with actual users before over-investing
  • Generalist who can move between frontend, backend, and product problems as needed
  • Effective communicator who can translate complex AI capabilities into intuitive experiences
  • Care about societal impacts and ethics of your work

Strong candidates may also have

  • Extensive experience with visual collaboration & creative tools (Figma, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud)
  • Hands-on UI/UX experience for AI-powered applications and fluency collaborating with designers
  • Background conducting user research, interviews, and usability testing
  • Deep frontend expertise in canvas rendering, complex editor UIs, design-system tooling, or graphics work (WebGL/shaders, 3D, animation)
  • Experience with real-time collaborative applications (multiplayer editing, WebSockets) or other high-performance frontend interactions

Candidates need not have

  • 100% of the skills listed above
  • Formal certifications or education credentials
  • Direct machine learning or AI research experience

Logistics

  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
  • Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
  • Minimum years of experience: Correlates with internal job level requirements for the position
  • Location-based hybrid policy: Staff are expected to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time (some roles may require more time in office)
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they do sponsor visas and retain an immigration lawyer to help where reasonable efforts are possible

Compensation

  • Annual Salary: $320,000 - $485,000 USD

How we're different

Anthropic works as a cohesive team on a few large-scale research efforts, values impact, and hosts frequent research discussions. The company emphasizes communication and collaborative work on high-impact AI research.
