About the team
The Applied team at OpenAI safely brings cutting-edge technology to the world. The team has released products such as ChatGPT, Plugins, DALL·E, and APIs for GPT-4, GPT-3, embeddings, and fine-tuning. The team also manages large-scale inference infrastructure. The Financial Engineering team within Applied Engineering focuses on monetization and billing systems, collaborating closely with GTM and Finance to tailor the billing stack for evolving internal requirements and customer needs.
Responsibilities
- Architect and build the next generation of billing and monetization systems at OpenAI.
- Develop across the stack to create comprehensive billing integrations for ChatGPT and API users.
- Design a billing platform suitable for both subscription and usage-based offerings, ensuring scalability and enterprise flexibility/readiness.
- Construct and integrate tools that empower internal teams to incorporate billing data into their workflows.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Data, Finance, Go-To-Market teams, and fellow engineers.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience developing and redeveloping production systems to launch new product capabilities and handle scaling challenges.
- Familiarity or experience with payments, billing, or monetization is a bonus.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfort engaging with partners outside engineering (e.g., Finance, GTM).
- Ability to move quickly in environments where scope can be loosely defined and priorities may compete.
- Deep investment in creating excellent user experiences and products that address customer needs.

- Base salary range: $255,000 - $405,000 (USD). Total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonuses.
