OpenAI's Applications Engineering organization builds and operates products that bring research to millions of users and developers (for example ChatGPT and the OpenAI API). This full-stack engineering role owns features end-to-end — from backend services to polished user interfaces — building systems, APIs, and client experiences that put OpenAI models into production.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate scalable backend services and web interfaces for products such as ChatGPT and the OpenAI API.
• Implement user-facing features using React and TypeScript while maintaining robust server-side logic in languages such as Python or Go.
• Build and maintain APIs and services with a focus on speed, scalability, and security.
• Collaborate closely with design and product teams to translate AI capabilities into intuitive experiences.
• Participate in on-call rotations to ensure high availability and performance.

Requirements

• Up to 6 years of full-stack engineering experience delivering production products (comfortable working across the stack).
• Hands-on experience with React and TypeScript for front-end development.
• Server-side development experience in Python and/or Go.
• Experience building and operating scalable cloud-based infrastructure and backend services, including designing and maintaining APIs.
• Focus on application performance, scalability, reliability, and security.
• Product sensibility and experience owning projects from concept through deployment and iteration.
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotations.

Compensation & Benefits

• Listed base pay: $255K (offers equity). Base pay may vary depending on location, skills, and experience; total compensation can include equity and performance-related bonuses.
