Details
Security is at the foundation of OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The Identity Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds identity and access management solutions that protect model weights, customer data, and critical systems across multiple cloud environments. The role is preferred to be based in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City but may consider remote work. The team uses a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
Responsibilities
- Build, deploy, and operate foundational security tools and identity infrastructure for a multi-cloud environment.
- Build new features for the IAM platform that integrate with evolving cloud services while adhering to security best practices.
- Design architectures and tooling that protect model weights, custom data, and sensitive assets across AWS, Azure, GCP, and future cloud environments.
- Develop automation, frameworks, APIs, and CLI tools to automate recurring security tasks (provisioning, rotating credentials, etc.).
- Drive security innovation by designing tools, processes, and architectures that protect data at scale.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with researchers, engineers, IT, and compliance teams to address security requirements for multi-cloud deployments and large-scale model training.
- Implement and refine access policies balancing rapid experimentation and protection of high-value assets.
- Troubleshoot complex identity or access issues across distributed systems to minimize downtime.
Requirements
- Background in building secure systems, from core IAM services to orchestration layers that manage credentials, roles, or policies at scale.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, or similar, with a track record of writing high-quality, maintainable code.
- Experience with modern cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) and multi-cloud deployments.
- Familiarity with industry-standard security protocols and authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth, SAML, OpenID Connect).
- Security-focused mindset, including knowledge of threat modeling and risk assessment; ability to embed security across the software development lifecycle.
- Strong collaboration skills; ability to work across diverse technical and non-technical teams.
Work Model & Locations
- Hybrid work model: typically 3 days in the office per week.
- Preferred locations: San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City; remote work may be considered (including Remote - US).
- Relocation assistance is offered to eligible new employees.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base pay range shown for this role: $184K - $385K (actual base pay varies by location, experience, and other factors). OpenAI also offers equity and may provide performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
