About the team

The Applied team safely brings OpenAI's technology to the world. We released ChatGPT; Plugins; DALL·E; and the APIs for GPT-4, GPT-3, embeddings, and fine-tuning. We also operate inference infrastructure at scale. There's a lot more on the immediate horizon.

Our customers build fast-growing businesses around our APIs, which power product features that were never before possible. ChatGPT is a prime example of what is currently possible. We simultaneously ensure that our powerful tools are used responsibly. Safe deployment is more important to us than unfettered growth.

The Fraud Engineering team works within our Applied Engineering organization identifying and responding to fraudsters on our platform. We are looking for a software engineer with anti-fraud & abuse experience to help architect and build our next-generation anti-fraud systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build systems for fraud detection and remediation while balancing fraud loss, cost of implementation, and customer experience.
  • Work closely with finance, security, product, research, and trust & safety operations to holistically combat fraudulent and abusive actors on the system.
  • Stay abreast of the latest techniques and tools to stay several steps ahead of determined and well-resourced adversaries.
  • Utilize GPT-4 and future models to more effectively combat fraud and abuse.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience in backend and data systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience in fraud or abuse analysis, investigation, and/or operations.
  • Ability to dive into an existing codebase, understand its behavior, and provide strong, actionable engineering suggestions.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and rapidly changing conditions; able to add structure when necessary.
  • Strong desire to learn and to communicate knowledge clearly and concisely to others.
  • Experience in machine learning techniques is a plus but not required.

Tech stack / Tools

  • Infrastructure and tooling: Terraform, Kubernetes, Azure.
  • Languages and systems: Python, Postgres, Kafka.
  • Models: GPT-4 (and future models) for abuse/fraud mitigation.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Base salary range: $255,000 - $405,000 per year. Offers equity and additional performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter expenses.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave (up to 24 weeks for birth parents and 20 weeks for non-birthing parents), plus paid medical and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off: flexible PTO for exempt employees and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt employees.
  • 13+ paid company holidays and additional company office closures.
  • Mental health and wellness support; employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend, daily meals in offices, and meal delivery credits as eligible.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
  • Additional taxable fringe benefits (charitable donation matching, wellness stipends) may be provided.
