About the Team

The Technical Success team is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective deployment of ChatGPT and OpenAI API applications for developers and enterprises. The team acts as a trusted advisor and thought leader for customers, helping developers and enterprises maximize value from OpenAI models and products.

About the Role

We are seeking a Solutions Engineer to partner with customers and ensure they achieve tangible business value from models delivered through ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. You will partner with senior business stakeholders to understand pre-sales needs, guide AI strategy, identify high-value use cases, demonstrate the value of OpenAI solutions, and recommend architectural patterns to kickstart implementation and development.

This role uses a hybrid work model (3 days in the office per week) and offers relocation assistance to new employees. The posting references both San Francisco, CA (based) and New York City as locations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver an exceptional pre-sales customer experience by providing technical expertise, outlining the value proposition, and answering product, API, and LLM-related questions.
  • Demonstrate how leveraging OpenAI APIs and ChatGPT can meet customers' business needs and deliver substantial business value (build and present demos, scope use cases, recommend architecture patterns, provide in-depth technical advisory).
  • Create and maintain documentation, guides, and FAQs related to common questions and requirements discovered during the pre-sales process.
  • Develop and nurture strong customer relationships during evaluation, validation, and purchasing processes.
  • Gather and relay customer feedback to internal teams, identify themes across customers, and incorporate them into product planning; foster customer advocacy and represent the voice of the customer.
  • Serve as the first line of defense for security and compliance questions, explain standardized collateral, guide customers toward relevant resources (e.g., trust portal), and escalate complex requirements to appropriate teams.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in a technical pre-sales or similar role, managing technical and business relationships with complex global organizations.
  • Thorough understanding of IT security principles and customer requirements for technical B2B SaaS products; experience providing higher-level security and compliance support.
  • Foundational training in programming (Python or JavaScript).
  • Experience delivering prototypes of Generative AI and/or traditional ML solutions and knowledge of network/cloud architecture.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills; ability to translate business and technical topics to all audiences, including senior leaders.
  • Ability to own problems end-to-end, learn missing knowledge needed to get the job done, and work collaboratively with humility and a team-oriented attitude.

Benefits

  • Base salary range: $220,000 - $280,000 (base pay may vary depending on market location, knowledge, skills, and experience). Total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter expenses.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave and paid medical/caregiver leave.
  • Flexible PTO for exempt employees (and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt), 13+ paid company holidays, and company office closures.
  • Mental health and wellness support; employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily meals in offices and meal delivery credits as eligible.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees and additional taxable fringe benefits (e.g., charitable donation matching, wellness stipends).

Additional Notes

  • Background checks will be administered in accordance with applicable law; qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered consistent with relevant laws (e.g., San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, California Fair Chance Act).
  • OpenAI is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities.
  • Candidates should expect to advise on API, LLM, and security/compliance topics and build technical demos/prototypes as part of the pre-sales process.
