Staff Applied Scientist (Causal Inference)

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. As an Applied Scientist within the Data Science organization, you will build cutting-edge models to navigate critical tradeoffs and drive business value.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deploy robust causal inference models to quantify the holistic business impact of new product launches (examples called out: Propensity Score Matching (PSM), Double ML).
• Establish standards for measurement for new product and feature launches.
• Provide technical mentorship for other members of the data science organization.
• Act as a thought partner for senior leadership to help guide product development decisions and strategy.

Requirements

• PhD or Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as Economics or Statistics, with 8+ years of distinguished industry experience.
• Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, R, or other programming languages used for data analysis and statistical modeling.
• Deep theoretical and applied expertise in a wide range of quasi-experimental methods and causal inference techniques.
• Track record of influencing business and product strategy through data-driven causal insights.
• Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and demonstrate Coinbase core cultural values (clear communication, positive energy, continuous learning, efficient execution).

Nice to Haves

• Experience in the fintech or crypto industries.
• Specific experience with pricing models, marketing attribution, or customer lifetime value (LTV) modeling.
• Familiarity with blockchain data and the unique opportunities and challenges of crypto businesses.

Location & Work Policy

• Remote-first position with required in-person participation throughout the year (team and company-wide offsites multiple times annually). #LI-Remote
• In-person attendance for certain events and offsites is expected and supported.

Compensation & Pay Transparency

• Target annual salary range (depending on work location): $207,485—$275,000 USD.
• Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).
