Airbnb is looking for a senior backend engineer to join the team responsible for building backend merchandising systems that power data-driven features and improve the booking funnel. The role is an individual contributor position with opportunities to drive long-term technical vision, architect systems from scratch, and lead implementation and delivery across multiple releases while partnering with several cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and influence the teamβs technical direction and roadmaps.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners (Product Managers, Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, Analytics, Search, Listings, Discovery, Booking, Checkout) to design and deliver high-quality systems.
- Design and implement backend services that drive organic bookings and improve user experience.
- Architect, prototype, build, and launch solutions for host or listing success and for company-wide merchandising products.
- Own the lifecycle of large, ambiguous problems from prototyping through production releases.
- Mentor and coach engineers both within and outside the team to ensure quality and alignment.
Requirements
- 9+ years of industry experience as a backend engineer with a BS, MS, or PhD in a relevant field.
- Proven experience building and scaling high-quality, high-traffic products or systems.
- Strong ability to evaluate technical approaches and design product solutions for real-world problems.
- Experience driving alignment, managing projects, and collaborating effectively with stakeholders.
- Demonstrated mentorship experience for junior developers.
- Experience in merchandising domains is a plus.
Compensation & Location
- Base pay range: $204,000 β $255,000 USD (base pay may be adjusted based on experience, skills, market factors). This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
- Location: US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites. Candidates must reside in a U.S. state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (some states excluded). Offices: United States.
