Role Overview

As a Data Scientist on the AirCover team, you will collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and operations specialists to build scalable and robust systems to detect, mediate, and solve issues, and optimize personalized product presentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop accurate, agile, and explainable fraud detection systems to protect platform quality and users.
  • Use NLP methods to detect intents from large-scale unstructured data.
  • Leverage computer vision to collect evidence from images and receipts for monetary value estimation.
  • Design user segmentation and personalization to optimize AirCover product presentation.
  • Route complex issues to agents using personalized strategies based on user history and agent performance.
  • Summarize customer journeys and conversations with large language models to assist operation agents.
  • Identify high impact business opportunities via data exploration and model prototyping.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to refine ML model requirements, drive scientific decisions, and measure impact.
  • Develop, productionize, and operate ML models for batch and real-time use cases.
  • Present work internally to technical and product stakeholders to iterate on roadmap progress.
  • Publish externally and engage with the scientific community.

Requirements

  • 9+ years of relevant industry experience (ML scientist, tech lead, junior faculty) plus a Master’s or PhD in relevant fields.
  • Strong fluency in Python and SQL; experience with Tensorflow, PyTorch, Airflow, and data warehouses.
  • Deep understanding of ML lifecycle best practices, algorithms (e.g., gradient boosted trees, neural networks), and domains like NLP, computer vision, personalization, and anomaly detection.
  • Proficiency with LLMs and related AI technologies including BERT, GPT, LLaMA, Mistral.
  • Ability to collaborate with software engineers and communicate complex technical details effectively.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity combined with pragmatism; publications or presentations in recognized venues are a plus.

Location

The position is US - Remote Eligible with occasional office or offsite work as agreed. Candidates must reside in states where Airbnb Inc. has a registered entity.
