At Coinbase we seek a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to revolutionize how we optimize Operations using ML and GenAI. This role focuses on applying modern ML techniques (including DNNs, transformers and LLMs) to automate document processing, risk assessment, and to protect our platform and users at scale. The company is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation and periodic offsites are expected.

Role overview

You will define technical strategy for a portfolio of projects, design and implement models that protect Coinbase users, fine-tune LLMs for automated document processing and risk assessment, and build real-time ML pipelines and explainable ML systems. You will collaborate with domain experts and platform teams to deploy production ML systems with high availability and low latency.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical strategy for a portfolio of projects.
• Design and implement models to protect funds and detect/prevent risks.
• Fine-tune large language models (LLMs) for automated document processing and risk assessment.
• Create real-time ML pipelines to detect and prevent risks before they materialize.
• Translate domain expert knowledge into ML features and models.
• Build explainable ML systems capable of justifying risk assessments.
• Collaborate with platform teams to deploy models at scale with high availability and low latency.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industry experience in Machine Learning (or PhD + 5 years).
• Prior experience working with Payment Risk, Credit Risk, or Account Takeover models.
• MS in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or another technical field (PhD preferred).
• Strong developer experience and ability to leverage auto-code generation techniques for ML and scalable distributed applications.
• Strong foundation in modern ML techniques (DNNs, transformers, LLMs, classification).
• Experience building and deploying production ML systems at scale.
• Ability to balance ML model complexity with production requirements.
• Strong communication skills to work effectively with domain experts.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with regulatory requirements in financial services.
• Knowledge of crypto/blockchain technology.

Compensation

• Target annual salary range: $217,900 — $217,900 CAD. Full-time offers also include target bonus, target equity and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
