Details

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Risk AI/ML team builds flexible, scalable, and intelligent systems to detect and prevent fraud, scams, and account takeovers at scale. As a member of this team you will build and deploy sophisticated AI/ML models for real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled risk-detection workflows and collaborate closely with Platform, Product, Analyst, and Ops teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design and deployment of production-grade AI/ML models and systems that scale to millions of users.
  • Investigate and apply cutting-edge methodologies (e.g., large-scale deep learning, LLMs, GNNs, reinforcement learning) to address challenges including fraud detection, recommender systems, feed ranking, and risk assessment.
  • Architect and build production ML pipelines that enable low-latency, high-reliability predictions and low-maintenance applied AI/ML solutions.
  • Drive execution across ambiguous, cross-team initiatives; prioritize technical debt and ensure systems evolve with business growth.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship, create onboarding codelabs, tools, and infrastructure to democratize AI/ML access across the organization.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, including significant experience deploying AI/ML systems into production.
  • Deep applied AI/ML expertise in one or more areas such as Risk ML, gradient boosting trees, large-scale deep learning, NLP/LLMs, computer vision, recommender systems, reinforcement learning, and GNNs.
  • Strong coding skills (example: Python) and deep experience with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Experience building backend systems at scale with a focus on data processing, AI/ML, or analytics.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and ability to lead complex, cross-team technical initiatives and deliver impactful AI/ML solutions at scale.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction across engineering, product, and leadership teams.
  • Proven track record of mentoring senior engineers and raising the technical bar on engineering teams.

Nice to Haves

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Mining, Statistics, or related technical field.
  • Familiarity with modern data and AI/ML infrastructure (e.g., Apache Airflow, Spark, Flink, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowflake, Hadoop, Hive).
  • Experience with MLOps best practices including monitoring, retraining, and continuous improvement of production models.
  • Experience with model interpretability and responsible AI.
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization.
  • Experience leveraging blockchain data as part of ML risk/fraud signals is relevant.

Pay Range

  • $260,100 β€” $260,100 USD
  • $262,650 β€” $309,000 USD
