Airbnb's Policy & Communications team is seeking a Staff Policy Economist within the Data Science organization to ensure engagements are data-driven and to provide actionable insights on high-visibility topics such as regulation, housing, tourism, economic development/impact, and taxes. The role requires strong quantitative skills, experience translating complex analyses into accessible resources, and the ability to collaborate across internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Conduct regulatory impact analysis and quantitative modeling to inform policy positions and stakeholder engagements.
- Use AI/ML models to derive insights from legislation and other unstructured data sources.
- Collaborate with academics, external experts, and cross-functional partners (policy/comms, business, legal, finance, data science).
- Perform mapping and spatial analysis of data and create GIS-based outputs.
- Produce clear, compelling visualizations, dashboards, and maps to convey key concepts and findings.
- Convert insights into accessible “data journalism” materials for communications.
- Build prototypes, dashboards, and tools to scale data usage across the organization.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in a quantitative field.
- 6+ years of experience in data modeling and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to perform complex strategic analysis and causal inference (e.g., econometric regressions and quasi-experimental techniques).
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with R and/or Python, SQL, data visualization tools, GIS, and Excel.
- Experience working with AI/ML on unstructured data sources (e.g., legislation) is expected.
- Strong project management, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Exposure to policy and economics domains, or adjacent domains.
Location and Work Policy
- This position is US - Remote Eligible. Candidates must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (some states are excluded). The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base pay range: $194,000 — $240,000 USD.
- The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
