Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Blockchain Platform - Platform)

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. This role sits on the Platform Product Group building the trusted, scalable, and compliant onchain platform used across Coinbase.

This position is remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company-wide offsites multiple times annually). Job #: GPBE06US

Pay Range: $218,025—$256,500 USD (full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits).

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop distributed systems and foundational infrastructure components used by many engineering teams (examples: dynamic configuration, secrets storage, container orchestration).
• Provide technical structure to teams and work closely with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps.
• Manage individual project priorities, deadlines and deliverables.
• Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards; anchor new projects and lead technical direction.
• Design and implement high-quality, well-tested production code to meet customer needs.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
• Strong background designing and building distributed systems and backend services.
• Experience with building foundational infrastructure components (e.g., configuration, secrets storage, container tooling).
• Passion for building an open financial system and familiarity with crypto/blockchain concepts is valued.

Nice to Haves

• Experience during rapid company growth (e.g., scaling from 10 to hundreds of engineers).
• Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
• Experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, and Postgres.
• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.
• Crypto-forward experience: interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, engaging with dApps or other blockchain-based services.
