Coinbase is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Consumer Product Group to help build the Coinbase retail app and wallet products. This role balances deep individual contribution with technical leadership: anchoring new projects, setting technical direction, mentoring engineers, and building foundational infrastructure and distributed systems that power production services. The team focuses on making Coinbase the easiest-to-use, fastest experience for crypto access and aims to be the #1 self-custody wallet by MTUs and download share.
Responsibilities
- Architect and develop distributed systems and foundational infrastructure components (e.g., dynamic configuration, secrets storage, container orchestration).
- Provide technical structure to teams and collaborate with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps.
- Manage project priorities, deadlines and deliverables using technical expertise.
- Mentor and train other engineers on design techniques and coding standards.
- Design and implement well-tested, high-quality code used in production by customers and other teams.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
- Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
- Passion for building an open financial system and an interest in crypto and blockchain technologies.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-expectation culture and actively seeking feedback to improve.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and contribute to both product and infrastructure efforts.
Nice to have
- Experience with rapid company growth (e.g., scaling engineering org from tens to hundreds of engineers).
- Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps).
- Experience decomposing a large monolith into microservices.
- Experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres.
- Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-critical systems.
Location & Work Policy
- Remote-first role (#LI-Remote); Coinbase requires in-person participation throughout the year (team and company offsites multiple times annually). Attendance at these events is expected and supported. The role is therefore best described as hybrid/remote-first.
Compensation
- Pay Range: $218,025 β $256,500 USD (target annual salary depending on work location). Full-time offers also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).
- Job #: GCBE06US
Additional Notes
- Answers to crypto-related questions may be used to evaluate onchain experience.
- Coinbase is an Equal Opportunity Employer and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities.
- Coinbase may pilot AI tools for initial screening interviews and interview note transcription; humans will review interview responses and Coinbase will not use AI to make employment decisions.
Benefits
- Medical, dental and vision plans with generous employee contributions
- Health Savings Account with company contributions
- Disability and life insurance
- 401(k) plan with company match
- Wellness stipend
- Mobile/internet reimbursement
- Connections stipend
- Volunteer time off
