Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer)

At Coinbase we aim to increase economic freedom in the world by building the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. The Consumer Product Group focuses on making the Coinbase retail app the easiest-to-use and fastest experience for accessing crypto, with products including the Coinbase app, advanced trade, dapps, and staking. This role is remote-first with required in-person participation throughout the year for team and company offsites.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop distributed systems and foundational infrastructure used by engineering teams in production (examples: dynamic configuration, secrets storage, container orchestration).
• Provide technical structure to teams, collaborate with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps and technical direction.
• Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
• Mentor and train other engineers on design techniques and coding standards.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
• Demonstrated ability to work across teams, lead technical direction, and mentor other engineers.
• Passion for building an open financial system and crypto/blockchain technology.

Nice to haves

• Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, engaging with dApps).
• Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
• Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres.
• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.
• Experience working at companies that scaled rapidly (e.g., from ~10 to hundreds of engineers).

Pay Transparency

• Target annual salary range: $218,025—$256,500 USD (full-time). Offers may also include bonus, equity, and benefits.
