Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Platform)

At Coinbase we aim to increase economic freedom by building an onchain platform and the future global financial system. The Platform Product Group builds trusted, scalable, and compliant platform foundations used by multiple products and teams. This role is remote-first but requires in-person participation throughout the year for team and company offsites.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop distributed systems.
• Provide technical structure to teams and collaborate with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps.
• Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
• Mentor and train other engineers on design techniques and coding standards.
• Design and implement foundational infrastructure components used by every engineering team in production (examples: dynamic configuration, secrets storage, container orchestration).
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
• Passion for building an open financial system and familiarity with crypto/blockchain concepts is valued.
• Comfortable collaborating across the organization and mentoring other engineers.

Nice to haves

• Experience with rapid company growth (e.g., scaling from 10 to hundreds of engineers).
• Experience decomposing a large monolith into microservices.
• Experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, and Postgres.
• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security-sensitive systems.
• Crypto-forward experience (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, or other onchain activity).

Compensation

• Target annual salary range: $217,800 — $217,800 CAD. Full-time offers also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
