Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Platform - Core Automation)

The Core Automation team is focused on designing and implementing AI-powered automation (Agentic AI) to automate customer support and compliance processes, build primitives and orchestration solutions, and scale AI-driven automation across domains.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Agentic AI systems that power Coinbase’s customer support experience and compliance processes
• Design and implement orchestration, guardrails, and measurement techniques to ensure AI Agents are grounded, relevant, and deliver customer delight
• Architect and develop distributed systems and foundational APIs (including APIs for use by LLMs)
• Provide technical structure and direction to teams; work with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps
• Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables using technical expertise
• Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering
• Proven experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact
• Passion for building an open financial system and working with crypto/blockchain-related problems (answers to crypto-related questions may be used to evaluate onchain experience)
• Experience designing and building distributed systems, orchestration, guardrails, measurement, and APIs
• Strong software engineering practices: testing, code quality, mentoring and system design

Nice to haves

• Experience getting LLM-based applications to production, including measuring and improving LLM grounding and reducing hallucinations
• Experience in Customer Support, Compliance, or Financial Crimes domains

• Pay Range: $218,025—$256,500 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits)
