Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Platform - Risk Platform)

At Coinbase we build the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. The Risk Platform team builds scalable, intelligent and resilient systems to proactively identify, assess and mitigate risks, protect customers' assets, and fight fraud. This role is part of the Platform Product Group which includes Product Foundations (Identity, Payment, Risk, Proofing & Regulatory, Finhub), Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop distributed systems and foundational platform components.
• Provide technical structure to teams and collaborate with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps.
• Manage project priorities, deadlines and deliverables using technical expertise.
• Mentor and train team members on design techniques and coding standards.
• Design and implement foundational infrastructure components used by engineering teams in production (examples: dynamic configuration, secrets storage, container orchestration).
• Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
• Passion for building an open financial system and belief in crypto and blockchain technology.
• Strong experience with designing and operating scalable, reliable backend systems and platform infrastructure.
• Ability to mentor others and influence technical direction and standards.

Nice to haves

• Experience building financial, high-reliability or security-critical systems.
• Exposure to online fraud prevention systems or prior work on fraud prevention.
• Experience growing engineering organizations rapidly (e.g., from 10 to 100s of engineers).
• Experience decomposing large monoliths into microservices.
• Experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres.
• Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services).

Pay & Other Notes

• Pay Range: $218,025 — $256,500 USD (full-time offers may also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits).
• In-person participation is required throughout the year; team and company offsites occur multiple times annually (role is remote-first but not remote-only).
