The Datastores team engineers the critical database infrastructure that powers every product, every transaction, and every user interaction on a global scale. This role is a technical leadership position responsible for building and operating highly available, scalable, and performant distributed database systems that support Coinbase's products.

Responsibilities

• Architect and pioneer the next generation of distributed database technologies (examples called out: MongoDB, Postgres, DynamoDB, ClickHouse, Redis) and build/run highly available services that handle millions of requests per second.
• Drive evolution of core database systems to improve scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency for a global user base.
• Serve as a technical leader and force multiplier: guide senior engineers and leadership on critical architectural decisions and anticipate future business needs.
• Own operational excellence: deliver well-tested code, take ownership of system reliability, perform proactive maintenance, and conduct expert-level troubleshooting during on-call rotations.
• Research and integrate industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously enhance systems and define the future of datastores for Web3.

Requirements

• At least 8+ years of industry experience with a proven track record of building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, highly available distributed systems.
• Deep, hands-on experience with incident response and disaster recovery for large-scale database deployments in production environments.
• Experience thriving in high-growth environments and handling scaling challenges (examples: growing from 10 to hundreds of engineers).
• Solid understanding of distributed database architecture, performance tuning, and reliability.
• Deep expertise in developing automation and tooling to manage large-scale distributed database systems with minimal human intervention.
• Strong communication skills; capable of driving complex technical decisions and aligning senior engineers and leadership on a long-term vision.

Additional details

• Work culture: remote-first but not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year; team and company offsites are held multiple times annually and attendance is expected.
