The Integrity team at OpenAI is dedicated to ensuring that our cutting-edge technology is secure from adversarial threats and misuse. The team defends against financial abuse, scaled attacks, and other forms of misuse that could undermine user experience or harm operational stability.

About the Role

You will work at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems and security infrastructure. Build, scale, and defend critical backend services that power training infrastructure at scale and protect the platform from misuse, adversarial behavior, and systemic abuse. Your work will ensure performance, reliability, and safety across OpenAI systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain systems and frameworks to identify and assess emergent risks (e.g., reasoning, instruction-following, or agentic behavior) to support security and safety teams.
• Architect and build scalable, resilient backend systems and internal tooling to support a lean, high-efficiency operating model.
• Proactively probe systems to uncover latent bugs and failure modes before they manifest in production.
• Work adjacent to research teams to translate novel technical ideas into production-grade, safe systems.
• Investigate complex systems to uncover bugs, edge cases, and unexpected failure modes and use insights to strengthen reliability.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience working on distributed systems, platforms, or infrastructure.
• Deep understanding of potential failure modes of AI and ML systems (e.g., sycophancy, adversarial inputs, jailbreaks, harmful outputs) and experience detecting or mitigating them.
• Experience building scalable, resilient backend systems and internal tooling.
• Strong debugging skills and a proactive approach to discovering and fixing latent bugs and failure modes.
• Comfort collaborating with research teams to productionize safety- and security-oriented innovations.

Benefits & Compensation

• Base salary range: $255,000 - $405,000 per year. Total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonuses.
