At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Institutional team enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. The Derivatives team within the Institutional Product Group has built an end-to-end platform that powers Futures trading (FCM) at Coinbase. The product launched in 2023 and has gained significant market adoption. The team owns the entire life cycle of derivatives trading including trade execution, risk management, and settlement.

This is a technical role designed for a Staff-level engineer interested in expanding into a limited amount of management duties. You will manage a small team (3–6 individual contributors) and provide technical leadership and impact through dedicated resources. The role is remote-first with required in-person participation throughout the year (team and company offsites). Answers to crypto-related questions may be used to evaluate onchain experience. Responsibilities

  • Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs and uplift the technical bar across the team.
  • Architect and develop the core derivatives platform responsible for trade execution and risk management.
  • Be a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aid in architectural decisions, and foster a culture of high-quality and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale.
  • Coach direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support their career growth.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
  • Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining high-volume and low-latency production services.
  • Passion for building an open financial system and interest in crypto and blockchain technologies.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Engineering management experience.
  • Experience building order management systems or risk engines with high-volume, low-latency characteristics.
  • Experience scaling through rapid company growth (startup β†’ mid-size).
  • Experience with Golang, Docker, AWS, Postgres, MongoDB, Kafka.
  • Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity (interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services).
