At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Institutional team enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. The Derivatives team within the Institutional Product Group has built an end-to-end platform that powers Futures trading (FCM). The product launched in 2023 and the team owns the entire lifecycle of derivatives trading including trade execution, risk management, and settlement.
This role is a technical leadership position (ideal for a Staff-level engineer) that combines hands-on backend engineering with a limited amount of management responsibility (managing a small team of ~3–6 individual contributors). The role is remote-first but requires in-person participation throughout the year for team and company-wide offsites.
Responsibilities
- Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet customer needs and uplift the technical bar across the team.
- Architect and develop the core derivatives platform responsible for trade execution and risk management.
- Serve as a thoughtful technical voice in the team, aiding architectural decisions and fostering a culture of operational excellence.
- Collaborate with Product and cross-functional Engineering teams to ensure delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale.
- Coach direct reports and support their career growth; manage a small team (3–6 ICs).
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering.
- Proven experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
- Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining high-volume, low-latency production services.
- Passion for building an open financial system and working in the crypto/blockchain space.
- Ability to write well-tested code and operate complex distributed systems.
Nice to haves
- Prior engineering management experience.
- Experience building order management systems or risk engines with high-volume, low-latency characteristics.
- Experience in rapidly growing companies (startup → mid-size).
- Familiarity or experience with: Golang, Docker, AWS, Postgres, MongoDB, Kafka.
- Crypto-forward experience such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, or other blockchain-based services.

- Pay Range (target annual salary): $211,650 — $249,000 USD.
