Anthropic is seeking a Technical Policy Lead for Government and Third-Party Safety Partnerships to advance safety partnerships with governments and external third-party evaluators. This hybrid role is technically grounded and drives policy impact — strengthening state capacity, building a wider ecosystem for AI safety, and developing shared standards to help ensure safe global transitions through transformative AI.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a bridge between Anthropic's Policy, Frontier Red Team, Alignment, Safeguards, and Legal teams and external government safety institutes and third-party evaluators.
- Identify and prioritize collaboration opportunities that advance state capacity on AI safety, strengthen the broader safety ecosystem, and support Anthropic policy objectives for ASL-4+ readiness and standards harmonization.
- Develop frameworks for engaging with emerging government safety organizations to promote a coherent global approach that leverages each country's capabilities.
- Evaluate and prioritize inbound requests from external safety organizations to focus Anthropic's engagement on high-impact collaborations.
- Own strategic alignment and day-to-day coordination with organizations such as US CAISI, UK AISI, and other relevant safety organizations, serving as the primary operational point of contact.
- Manage research and testing collaborations covering pre/post-deployment evaluations, safeguards testing, and alignment research.
- Coordinate between internal teams (Policy, Frontier Red Team, Alignment, Safeguards, Legal, Communications) to facilitate external safety partnerships.
- Support Legal in negotiating and maintaining collaboration agreements and MOUs and manage technical access provisions per agreement terms.
- Track external safety partnerships and provide timely updates to internal stakeholders; position partnerships to provide decision-relevant information for internal safety teams and processes (e.g., safety cases).
- Represent Anthropic at external conferences and speaking engagements.
Requirements
- Direct experience with government or third-party safety organizations (experience working with or at entities such as US CAISI, UK AISI, METR, Apollo, or equivalent is cited as relevant).
- Technical background in AI safety-relevant areas sufficient to engage credibly with evaluation methodologies, understand alignment and safeguards concepts, and partner with internal technical staff.
- Familiarity with safety standards such as Anthropic's Responsible Scaling policy and the EU Code of Practice.
- Proven track record in multi-stakeholder coordination across research, policy, legal, and communications teams.
- Strong judgment in ambiguous situations, ability to synthesize incomplete information, identify blockers, and drive decisions as strategic direction evolves.
- Sound prioritization skills and the ability to manage stakeholder expectations with clarity and directness.
- Effective communication across contexts: briefing executives, explaining technical evaluation plans to policy teams, and coordinating with external researchers and engineers.
- Understanding of government contexts, including information security, inter-agency coordination, and policy development processes.
- Education: at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Logistics
- Locations: role can be based in San Francisco, Washington, DC, or London. The listing header shows San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC.
- Office policy: hybrid; Anthropic expects staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time (location-based hybrid policy).
- Visa sponsorship: Anthropic does sponsor visas in many cases and retains an immigration lawyer, though sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role or candidate.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary range: $230,000 - $265,000 USD. Total compensation for full-time employees includes equity, benefits, and may include incentive compensation.
- Other benefits mentioned: competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and access to office space for collaboration.
