About the Team

OpenAI's Human Data Team creates custom data solutions driving groundbreaking research. The team enhances and evaluates flagship models and products such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, and Sora, and contributes to safety initiatives through collaboration with the Preparedness and Safety Systems teams.

About the Role

As a Technical Program Manager (TPM) on the Human Data team, you will partner with research and engineering to design and implement pragmatic solutions for collecting high-quality data. You will act as a key interface between the research roadmap, external vendors, AI trainers, and the Human Data engineering team. This role is based in OpenAI's San Francisco HQ and reports to the Head of Human Data Operations. The company offers relocation support to new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with researchers to scope data collection needs, define success metrics, and establish quality measurement frameworks.
  • Design and execute data collection campaigns: translate research needs into actionable plans and accelerate execution by leveraging existing tooling and iterating to reach the desired outcome. Implement interim solutions when needed and partner with engineering to design robust, scalable solutions.
  • Unblock yourself: proactively remove dependencies and implement partial solutions when external blockers exist.
  • Build and optimize dashboards to track campaign performance, leveraging SQL and Python for data analysis and to generate actionable insights.
  • Drive technical roadmaps: collaborate with engineers to enhance data platforms, resolve blockers, and ensure security best practices such as access management.
  • Scale impact by advising and empowering program managers and vendors to drive day-to-day execution while focusing on high-priority opportunities.

Requirements

  • Proficient in SQL for querying databases, processing large datasets, creating analytics dashboards, optimizing data retrieval, and visualizing insights.
  • Proficient in Python for data analysis and interacting with tools via APIs (sending requests, processing responses, and integrating functionalities into workflows).
  • Strong understanding of how large language models (LLMs) work and experience or knowledge of prompt engineering.
  • Comfortable working at large scale across a portfolio of projects; experience working with external vendors and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Action-oriented, resourceful, and able to learn technical concepts quickly; able to operate with high throughput, frequent context switching, and expansive ownership.
  • Grit and creative problem solving; ability to navigate ambiguity and thrive in dynamic environments.

Benefits

  • Base pay range: $285,000 - $355,000 (total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonus(es)).
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts (Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, commuter expenses).
  • 401(k) with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave, paid medical and caregiver leave.
  • Flexible PTO for exempt employees and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt employees.
  • 13+ paid company holidays and multiple company office closures throughout the year.
  • Mental health and wellness support; employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend; daily meals in offices and meal delivery credits as eligible.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
