Details

You will join ING's ESG Tribe in COO Risk for a 6-month thesis internship focused on analysing Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and their implications for the mortgage market and credit risk. The role offers exposure to sustainable finance, data modelling and risk practices, working closely with colleagues from COO Risk, ESG Risk and Sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on EPC data and its relation to financial risk metrics (e.g., PD, LGD).
  • Develop or improve proxy models for EPC estimation using data-driven and machine learning approaches where label coverage is limited.
  • Propose strategies or modelling approaches to handle expired EPC labels (post 10-year expiry).
  • Evaluate consumer incentives or policy mechanisms to increase EPC renewal rates.
  • Assess feasibility of decarbonization pathways for a mortgage portfolio (e.g., achieving EPC=A by 2030) and estimate required renovation rates.
  • Communicate findings effectively to stakeholders and collaborate with Risk, Finance and Sustainability experts.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Master’s program (thesis phase) at a Dutch university or EU university for EU passport holders.
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with data analysis or machine learning methods.
  • Interest in sustainability, energy efficiency and financial risk.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
