At Coinbase we aim to increase economic freedom by building the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. The Agent Productivity Tools (APT) organization within Enterprise Applications and Architecture builds a unified and secure compliance platform that leverages technology and human expertise to surface, investigate, and prevent illicit financial activities while improving CX agent productivity and reducing user friction.

The role is for an Engineering Manager who will extend the compliance platform, lead an agile team, and help Coinbase improve security, compliance, and cost. While Coinbase is remote-first, in-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites multiple times annually).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a multi-hat leader across Customer Experience, CX Agent Experience, and Technology to deliver secure, scalable, and efficient compliance tools.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors to evaluate solutions and drive build-vs-buy decisions.
  • Build and manage an engineering team and guide development of product features and underlying infrastructure.
  • Coach direct reports, support career growth, and hire talented engineers.
  • Work with engineers, designers, product managers, cross-org stakeholders, and senior leadership to turn vision into a quarterly roadmap.
  • Break down complex projects into smaller pieces and iterate on design and implementation with Product and Engineering.
  • Act as a thoughtful technical voice, supporting the team in architectural decisions.
  • Own and deliver processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
  • Foster an environment that generates and turns innovative ideas into action.
  • Anticipate potential issues and adapt approaches within constraints to avoid adverse impact.
  • Communicate program updates to technical and non-technical audiences and distill complex technical themes for non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
  • Deep understanding of high quality code and software engineering processes and how to foster them.
  • Execution-focused with the ability to navigate ambiguity, do long-term thinking, and short-term planning.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
  • Passion for human interface tools and for building an open financial system.
  • Strong agile mindset and ability to orchestrate technical resources in resource-constrained environments.
  • Proven ability to create order out of chaos with minimal guidance.
  • Experience building foundational infrastructure libraries used by engineering teams in production (examples given: Coinbase Server Framework (CSF), rate limiters, memcached / MongoDB clients, circuit breakers, observability integration).
  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CircleCI, BuildKite (or similar CI systems).
  • Experience with two of SQL/NoSQL databases, gRPC, GraphQL, Kafka, message queues (MQ).
  • Proficiency in Ruby or Golang.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Range: $218,025 — $256,500 USD (target salary depending on work location). Full-time offers also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits.
