Community Overview

The Service Platform team increases developer velocity at Airbnb by providing the standardized, easy to use service RPC framework and core systems libraries, and scaling service developer tooling and workflows for Airbnb’s largest code repository. As the engineering manager, you’ll lead a team of talented software developers that work to improve productivity for all of Airbnb’s backend engineers.

The Service Platform team is part of our Developer Platform org. Airbnb is evolving our large Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to meet the company’s changing needs and ambitions. Our team is impactful and high-leverage: we work every day to make the entire engineering organization more productive. • Partner closely with engineering leaders, platform team peers, and developer stakeholders to translate business priorities and developer feedback into technical strategy and deliverables.

• Shape and execute on the Service Platform strategy, modernizing our backend service framework and scaling our development tools and workflows to accelerate development across Airbnb.
• Manage, grow, and inspire a distributed team of engineers working on large-scale systems at the core of Airbnb’s backend developer experience.

A Typical Day / Responsibilities

• Lead and manage two high-impact teams — Service Frameworks and Service Tools — ensuring they are aligned, supported, and working cohesively toward shared goals.
• Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for the Service Platform pillar, making foundational decisions that influence how services are built, tested, deployed, and operated across Airbnb.
• Collaborate deeply with stakeholders across Developer Platform, Infrastructure, and product engineering to understand needs, influence direction, and ensure that our work accelerates Airbnb’s broader priorities.
• Mentor and develop engineers and managers, providing clear feedback, identifying growth opportunities, and elevating the next generation of technical leaders.
• Cultivate a strong engineering culture centered on collaboration, ownership, empathy for developers, customer-centricity, and continuous improvement.
• Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices — and thoughtfully integrate them into our frameworks, tools, and long-term strategy.
• Ensure operational excellence, raise quality standards, and model craftsmanship in how systems are designed and how platform capabilities are delivered.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven engineering leadership experience (ideally 5+ years managing engineers, with at least 2+ years at a manager-of-managers level).
• Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA).
• Familiarity with patterns, libraries and frameworks for building and testing services, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience defining and setting organizational strategies and roadmaps, and deriving measurable goals and success criteria.
• A track record of building highly-functional, healthy, inclusive, and collaborative teams and making culture choices that positively impact engineering.

Location

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. While the position is Remote Eligible, you must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Compensation & Benefits

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

Pay Range: $244,000—$305,000 USD
