Airbnb Payments team builds and maintains a global payments platform that moves billions of dollars across 191 countries and 75 currencies. The team focuses on payments partners, global licenses, compliance, regulation controls, and new payment experiences for guests and hosts. This role is part of the Payments Growth & Personalization Org and requires strong domain knowledge in payments, backend systems, and distributed architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Build backend services and APIs to create scalable engineering systems.
  • Work with data scientists, business analysts and operations to define, capture, and use real-time event data for business insights and product features.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure engineering teams to participate in, validate, and evolve how code is built, tested, and deployed in a distributed Service-Oriented Architecture.
  • Alter existing and develop new data access and protection patterns to ensure personal data is safe and secure at scale.
  • Lead complex projects through technical and regulatory constraints, communicate intricate subject matter, and build alignment with engineers, data scientists, finance, compliance, legal, and business partners.
  • Run experiments, leverage data, and follow structured approaches to build business use cases and drive cost efficiencies across the payments platform.

Requirements

  • 5–9+ years of industry experience.
  • Backend or Full-Stack experience in a work setting.
  • Extensive experience working with Java in a distributed microservice environment.
  • Exposure to architectural patterns for large, high-scale web applications (well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms).
  • Strong understanding of data structures and problem-solving approaches, with the ability to articulate trade-offs.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Comfortable tackling ambiguous problems and unblocking yourself; data-driven in how you validate solutions.
  • Passion for building highly effective technology platforms and mentoring other engineers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • BS in Computer Science, MIS, or equivalent work-related experience.

  • Base pay range: $195,000 β€” $220,000 USD (subject to factors such as experience, skills, and market demands).
  • May include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites as agreed with your manager.
