Staff GenAI System Engineer, Automation Foundation

Details

Airbnb Community Support's Automation Foundation team builds large-scale systems and tooling to deliver world-class customer service for guests and hosts. The team owns a conversational AI Automation Platform and automations that provision and assist both human agents and AI agents. This role focuses on backend systems, workflow optimization, and tight integration of LLM-driven capabilities into production services.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical vision and strategy for workflow and backend optimization across the Automation Platform.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, engineering, and data science teams to develop backend systems and improve AI prompt effectiveness.
• Drive full development lifecycle: technical design, implementation, testing, experimentation, and deployment.
• Contribute to and lead code and design reviews; provide constructive feedback to improve technical quality.
• Optimize system availability, performance, scalability, efficiency, and resilience.
• Automate provisioning and orchestration for internal human agents and AI agents.

Requirements

• 9+ years of software development experience focused on service-oriented architectures and backend development.
• Expertise in workflow optimization and backend systems design with emphasis on scalable, flexible architectures.
• Expertise in prompt engineering and iterating on prompts to fine-tune AI/LLM-driven scenarios.
• Deep understanding of RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) patterns, memory routing, and agent planning.
• Experience integrating LLMs with APIs, vector databases, and orchestration frameworks.
• Strong proficiency in crafting backend systems with high technical quality, efficiency, and resilience.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively across teams and domains.
• Passion for agile development processes, system optimization, and improving team productivity.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Location & Work Policy

• US - Remote Eligible. Candidate must reside in a U.S. state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (some states excluded). Role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites as agreed with manager.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base pay range: $204,000—$255,000 USD (actual base pay depends on factors such as experience, skills, and market). This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
