Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that are safe and beneficial for users and society. The Applied AI Research Engineer will explore Anthropic's models and products, validate their capabilities with customers, and equip Applied AI teams to sell and deliver them effectively.
The role works at the intersection of research, product development, customer adoption, and go-to-market execution. It involves embedding with product teams, testing new models, building demos and evaluations, supporting strategic customers with novel technical challenges, and communicating field insights back to Product, Engineering, and Research teams.
Responsibilities
- Embed with product teams to develop deep technical expertise in new products and capabilities and become a field subject-matter expert.
- Own the technical-to-go-to-market handoff for model and product launches, including early testing, field-readiness assessments, and capability education throughout the model lifecycle.
- Build demos, evaluations, and prototypes that showcase customer-relevant model and product capabilities, and define appropriate performance standards for important domains.
- Develop enablement materials, including playbooks, training sessions, and reference architectures, in partnership with Technical Enablement.
- Work directly with strategic customers facing novel technical challenges, develop solutions, and package learnings into scalable approaches for the broader field.
- Synthesize customer and product insights for Product and Research teams, identifying adoption patterns, blockers, and capability gaps that should inform research and product roadmaps.
- Partner with Sales and Applied AI teams to support high-value accounts requiring specialized domain expertise.
- Travel occasionally to customer sites for workshops, implementation support, and research collaboration.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of experience as a Software Engineer, Technical Product Manager, Forward Deployed Engineer, AI startup founder, or in a similar technical role, ideally with exposure to customers or end users.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate complex technical problems and translate findings into materials, training, or tools that help others succeed.
- Strong technical aptitude and proficiency in at least one programming language.
- Meaningful experience building with large language models, such as shipping LLM-powered products, developing agents or workflows, or integrating models into production systems.
- Experience designing evaluations, building prototypes, or developing technical enablement for complex products.
- Ability to quickly develop domain expertise and become a credible technical voice on new product areas.
- Curiosity about AI model capabilities and an interest in probing the limits of new models and identifying newly enabled use cases.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex topics clearly to diverse internal and external stakeholders, including executives.
- Ability to operate and execute amid ambiguity, flex across domains, and find simple, understandable solutions.
- Collaborative, service-oriented mindset.
- Passion for using technology safely and beneficially to advance safe AI systems.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study should be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.
Compensation
